Downspout count calculator

Sizing a residential or light-commercial rainwater system starts with a practical question: how many downspouts do these gutters need so water does not pond, overflow, or overload a single outlet during a design storm?

Industry planning practice answers that with two independent checks. First, total gutter length is divided by a maximum run per downspout—commonly about thirty to forty feet of gutter per outlet so water does not travel too far before it drops. Second, roof drainage area is divided by the roof area one downspout can serve—often about six hundred square feet for a typical two-by-three-inch rectangular downspout, or more for a three-by-four-inch outlet. This calculator accepts total gutter length, roof area that drains into those gutters, and optional capacity limits, then returns a deterministic whole-number downspout count equal to the maximum of the two rules, plus intermediate fields so estimators can see which constraint binds. The free browser widget and the API share the same pure arithmetic module, so interactive checks and automated takeoffs never disagree.
