On a right-angle plan intersection the valley line travels on the diagonal, so the plan run is the common run multiplied by the square root of two; that diagonal valley run is then combined with the vertical rise through Pythagoras to produce the ridge-to-plate valley length, and any along-valley eave tail is added last. A classic check uses a twelve-unit run with a six-twelve pitch and zero overhang, which yields exactly eighteen units of valley stock after the square-root step. All measurements must share the same linear unit—feet, inches, or metres—because the engine never converts units for you.
