On a right-angle plan intersection the valley line travels on the diagonal, so the plan run is the common run multiplied by the square root of two; that diagonal valley run is then combined with the vertical rise through Pythagoras to produce the ridge-to-plate valley length, and any along-valley eave tail is added last.
