Standby power — also called phantom load, vampire power, or idle draw — is the electricity a plugged-in device still uses when it is not performing useful work: the glowing LED on a television, the always-on network radio in a smart speaker, or the trickle charge in a laptop brick.

Individually the watts look small; left on for every hour of every day they become measurable kilowatt-hours and a line on the yearly bill. This standby power cost calculator multiplies idle wattage by hours per day and days per year, converts to kilowatt-hours, and multiplies by your tariff so you see daily, monthly, and annual cost in the same currency unit as your rate. Use it before buying smart strips, when auditing a media shelf full of always-on boxes, or when pinning deterministic fixtures in home-energy apps. The free browser path and the prepaid API share the same pure arithmetic so classroom demos and production pipelines never disagree.

The API is asynchronous: the call returns a task_id immediately and the result arrives by webhook. Polling is capped at 1 req/s per task.
