The governing identity is fully deterministic: c equals Q divided by the product of m and ΔT. When heat is in joules, mass in grams, and temperature change in degrees Celsius or kelvin, the result is in joules per gram per degree, the unit students and technicians use most often in introductory calorimetry. Classic checks include water-like values near four point one eight four when a hundred-gram sample absorbs about four thousand one hundred eighty-four joules over a ten-degree rise, and metal samples that return much smaller c for the same mass and ΔT.
