This factor of safety calculator finds the classic mechanical design ratio used when you know a material or member ultimate strength and the working stress under service load.

The definition is the closed form n equals ultimate strength divided by working stress: how many times the design stress fits into the ultimate capacity. A result of four means the ultimate strength is four times the working stress; a result near one means little reserve remains before the assumed ultimate is reached. Ultimate strength and working stress must share a consistent stress unit such as megapascals or pounds per square inch; the ratio itself is dimensionless. Working stress must be non-zero because division by a zero design stress is undefined. The engine is fully deterministic arithmetic: no network calls, no sampling, and no date-dependent shortcuts.
